Well that job I took 2 years ago is over now and I'm looking for a new one. Just done some training courses in C# and Python, plenty to apply for at the moment (good) and getting interviews (good) but..but..scuse me..so much for all the things I thought I'd be doing with extended time off. And damn, I've just deleted more LJ messages than I meant to (just wanted to lose all the out of date birthday ones) and I don't think I can get them back. Oh.

On Monday 5th August I will join the commuting crowd when I start a new job near London Bridge.

Is anyone else using lj_talk? The server certificate is apparently invalid so I'm hesitating to try it.

We have one practically empty and unused, and a good neighbour has enquired about the possibility of renting it informally. Apart from scanning classifieds in the local rags for some idea of a fair price, I think it's a random enough subject to ask you all about. Do any of you have any thoughts or experiences to share?

Since the recent (well, last year) marvellous expansion of our available living space, my layout is now permanently set up for playing at the flick of a switch and the raking of wagons and locos. It's not 'exhibition' standard, whatever you take that to be, but if South Wales coalfield freight trains (ca.1950 - ca.1990) in 'N' gauge do it for you and you'd like to come and see, drop us a line, you'll be more than welcome. I'm not sure the cats can tell an MDO from an ODA, see.

A couple of months ago I got a new battery from the Apple store in Cambridge at the considerable expense of about £100, and no money off for returning the old one (not that it was any use to me). Anyway, I can now internet without the hassle of connecting it up to the mains every time. Liberating. Network-wise it can now talk to the desktop, but the utility is unsurprisingly limited as I'm not in the habit of leaving either of them powered up when not in use.

In other news I've left a memory stick in the small pocket of a pair of jeans that I took to the dry cleaners (mostly because they need a repair) yesterday. Drat. I'll have to go into town today to see if they rescued it for me. Fingers crossed for no nasty guey mess of the soft plastic covering, or clogged contacts. The data is all duplicated elsewhere, fortunately, but it would still be annoying to lose.

LT409 and UD25 are now working, ticking away quietly on the coffee table in front of me, and with the right faces on too this time. They came back from the jewellers/watchmenders the first time with the faces swapped, so that LT had bold late deco period Roman numerals and UD had exuberantly stylish 40's?50's Arabic. Luckily the repairer owned up when questioned about this and put it right without complaint. LT needed a new mainspring and service, total cost £75, and UD just needed a service for £50. One of them (no one's sure which, now) required a new top balance pivot (I think). Many, many thanks to duoinchains.

Laptop is great, but has 2 problems:
(1) Battery is so dead it won't recharge. So I have to rely on the natty but rather precarious magnetically-retained power lead connection. It disconnects very easily if the cable is disturbed, and when it does, the battery being useless, POW - everything goes. Apparently this will cost me about £100 - for a new battery - and the new one may only last about 2 years of active service. This is hard to accept. I wonder if the old one can be taken apart and just the non-proprietary but functionally most important bits (I'm thinking of the rechargeable cells themselves) replaced? It would need a small, asterisk-ended screwdriver....hmmm

I didn't do anything special for the New Year, like go to an outdoor event or a party, but there's nothing unusual in that. How about you? I think the last time I Read more...Collapse )

Yesterday I bought myself a second hand laptop so that I can just use it whenever in the living room instead of having to make the small but discouraging effort of moving my **** to where my working computer is, and inevitably removing myself from the domestic loop and whatever else I want to be keeping half a mind on. So I feel like doing more random stuff like this post. Hooray! Hello anyone who still has me on their friends page. It has been a while. Now, friends page....what have I been missing?
